What is MS?

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society defines MS as: an autoimmune disease. The body's own defense system attacks myelin, the fatty substance that surrounds and protects the nerve fibers of the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord (the central nervous system). The damaged myelin may form scar tissue (sclerosis). Often the nerve fiber is also damaged. When any part of the myelin sheath or nerve fiber is damaged or destroyed, nerve impulses to and from the brain are distorted or interrupted, producing the various symptoms of MS.

But what is MS really? Each person diagnosed with multiple sclerosis would answer differently.

MS can mean that you can't enjoy a summer's day, as the heat exacerbates your symptoms.
MS can mean that you can't drive anymore, as your vision is not what it once was.
MS can mean that you can't feel your legs, can't ever be too far from a bathroom, can't carry your child in your arms, can't work an 8 hour day.

What does MS mean to you? Please post your experiences to help others understand what MS really is.

Gina,

I was looking at your site and just wanted to let you know that you're doing a great job.

For me, MS means many of the things you mentioned. Most importantly, it has robbed me of my independence and is a financial and emotional burden on family as well.

It's a challenge, but we just need to make that decision -- every day -- to take on what we can, and not dwell on what we can't.

MS for means a lot:
- self education
- self-confidence
- persistence
- curiosity
- courage
- etc

That's just not what MS Society and big pharma is trying to explain us. They are trying to present symptoms as a disease, trying to hide all the underlying causes.

For me MS a reaction of deregulated, confused and mad immune system, creating an autoimmune reaction.

Scientists even introduced a term 'immunotoxin'. That mainly are man-made chemicals, especially pesticides etc.

Such an explanation helped me to choose proper strategy so I am on a permanent MS remission from 1997.
